Fandakova suspends the decision on Sofia’s new zoning

“I will submit to the Sofia Municipal Council a report for suspending the decision to change the millage tax zones in Sofia,” the capital’s Mayor Yordanka Fandakova said yesterday. Yesterday morning, Sofia’s Deputy Mayor in charge of financial affairs, Minko Gerdzhikov, handed in his resignation, motivating it with “taking personal responsibility”. Fandakova explained that she will wait for the inspection on the case regarding the inflated millage taxes of some residents to be completed and will afterwards make a decision on Gerdzhikov’s resignation. She added that officials from his team were certainly to blame for what had happened, but a decision for them will also be made after the end of the inspection.

Gerdzhikov himself commented to Focus that the change of millage tax zones was a correct decision, entirely in line with economic logic. “Sofia is not the same as it was in 1998. The market prices of real estate property have changed and these should be reflected in the tax evaluations,” he added. According to him, however, it was a mistake that Sofia’s citizens were not sufficiently well-informed about the change. “As serious tensions arose in connection with this issue, I want to take the necessary steps, so that the tension should not be transferred to Mrs. Fandakova, because it was me who made this proposal,” said Gerdzhikov. He explained the accumulated increase in some millage taxes with a technical error.
