Bulgaria is in the golden mean in terms of property rights protection

Bulgaria ranks 64th among 129 countries worldwide in terms of property rights protection, showed the 5th annual International Property Rights Index (IPRI), drafted in Bulgaria by the Institute for Market Economics (IME) in partnership with Alliance Property Rights, Washington, and the programme Hernando de Soto Fellowship. Bulgaria has a total score of 5.3 points, out of 10 points, and ranks along with countries such as Turkey, Thailand, Morocco, Croatia, Brazil and Benin among the 129 countries covered by the survey.

Venezuela is at the bottom of the ranking with 3.4 points. Zimbabwe, Burundi and Bangladesh mark slightly better results. Finland and Sweden top the ranking with 8.5 points. Singapore occupies the third position, with 8.3 points, while New Zealand, Norway, Luxembourg and Switzerland rank fourth with 8.2 points. This year, the 129 countries, included in the survey have slightly increased their average score and it is now 5.6 points, compared to 5.5 points a year ago, indicated IME analysts.

IPRI ranks and compares countries worldwide in terms of their degree of protection of intellectual and physical property. The 129 countries included are ranked according to 10 individual indicators, grouped into three areas - legislative and political environment, the right to physical property and to intellectual property.

Traditionally, Bulgaria’s poorest performance is with respect to the legislative and political environment criteria - just 5 points in 2011. The result in terms of the right to physical property, where Bulgaria used to achieve its best results in previous years, in 2011 decreased by 0,4 to 5,6 points. The largest decrease was recorded with respect to the access to loans sub indicator - from 4.9 points in 2010 to 4.1 points in 2011, which is due to the negative consequences of the global economic and financial crisis.
