Meglena Kuneva vows to be the President of citizens and change

“The Presidential institution should act as embodiment of unity and should strengthen the voice of citizens,” Meglena Kuneva said when announcing her candidacy for President of Bulgaria at the Radisson Hotel in Sofia,

“I am here to summon Bulgaria’s majority,” stated Kuneva and motivated her desire for reforms saying that in the fifth year after Bulgaria’s EU-accession we were still experiencing “a deficit of reformist thinking, self-esteem, freedom, openness, fairness.” She added that “our children escape to their dreams and we run in anger. It is vital to change the course; Bulgaria is estranging from Europe because it has turned to and is moving to the past”.

A week after it was publicly announced that Kuneva would be nominated for Presidential candidate by an initiative committee, its members revealed themselves. The event was publicly announced as a meeting of Meglena Kuneva with the general public. But citizens turned out to be just a minority among the numerous representatives of the National Movement for Stability and Progress, including the founder of the party Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the mandate-bearer of his government, Vessela Draganova and the former finance minister Milen Velchev.

There are four main problems and challenges that Kuneva plans to focus on during her work as a future Head of State – poverty, the demographic collapse, education and healthcare.

Within ten days, she will present her pre-election platform for discussion. Kuneva stated that she would not seek greater Presidential powers. “The nation’s problems stem from the lack of an audible voice and not from a lack of governmental power,” said the former EU commissioner. She asked rhetorically if greater powers would help for a better-quality education, culture or Bulgaria’s better image in the world.
