Some 38% of Bulgarians support Plevneliev, 23% - Kalfin

If the elections were held today, the presidential candidate of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) Rosen Plevneliev would receive some 38.5% of the votes, while the nominated by the left –wing parties Ivaylo Kalfin - 23.5%, and Meglena Kuneva - 18.4%, showed a survey on public attitudes, conducted by Alpha Research in the period September 8 - 15, among 1,040 adult Bulgarians, which was released yesterday.

By mid-September, about 60% of the voters said they will partake in the upcoming elections. The interest in local elections is still a bit higher than in the presidential ones. A total of 62% of respondents said they will vote for local authorities and 59% of the polled declared that they will cast their vote in the presidential elections.

According to Alpha Research, the profile of the voters for Plevneliev coincides almost entirely with the voters of GERB, but with two differences. The first is that he is more strongly supported by the intelligentsia, by free-lancers, where the ruling party is losing positions. The second is that he receives support from right-wing voters, while GERB holds much more "centrist positions."

An express survey showed that the "friendly fire" on the part of Tsvetan Tsvetanov against Rosen Plevneliev has received wide public attention but, at least up to now, it has no significant effect on electoral attitudes. Some 46% of the respondents said that they have been following closely the development of the case, 33% had heard of it in general and the scandal never reached some 21% of the poled. Tsvetan Tsvetanov is suffering the greatest negative effect from the event - about 64% of the polled people believed that he had made a blunder having first told about the case of the alleged bribery, and then, having to justify himself.
