Mediana agency predicts a runoff in Sofia

Sociologist Kolyo Kolev from Mediana predicted yesterday a runoff at the mayoral elections in Sofia as a conclusion of the survey conducted by the polling agency in the capital city in the period October 6-11. The data shows that 32.2% of the electorate will vote for the candidate of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), Yordanka Fandakova. Her left-wing rival, Georgi Kadiev gathers 17.7% of the votes and remains second, and Proshko Proshkov, backed by the Blue Coalition, is third with 8.9%. Some 6.8% of the capital’s citizens will vote for Nikolay Pehlivanov from the Ataka party, whose supporters are increasing in number and approximating these of the Blue Coalition’s nominee. Some 4.1% of the polled say they will cast their votes for Vladimir Karolev from the National Movement for Stability and Progress.

The survey registered an unusually high willingness of the electorate to vote – 70% of Sofia’s citizens said they would go to the polls. According to Kolyo Kolev, a high electoral activity will ‘guarantee’ a runoff, while if it drops to 50%, the mayoral elections might be decided still at the first round. In this case, the winner will probably be the incumbent Mayor Yordanka Fandakova. In case of a runoff, Fandakova and Georgi Kadiev will be the contenders for the post.

According to Kolev, the vote will be largely motivated by party leanings and Yordanka Fandakova has good chances to win. The incumbent Sofia Mayor could expect a strong support from women voters, adds Kolev.

According to Mediana, the appraisal of Yordanka Fandakova’s work is moderately positive – there are neither distinct negative evaluations, nor strongly positive ones. However, she is not being directly appraised as a Mayor and the attitude towards her is strongly affected by the attitude towards GERB itself. Therefore, she gathers negative assessments from the supporters of opposition parties and those disappointed with GERB.
