Food Safety Agency to check fodder for GMO

“The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) will check the signals of environmentalists from Varna about the sale of fodder with genetically modified soybean without the necessary label on the package,” BFSA’s expert Marina Zagorov said on the Bulgarian National Radio. She specified that the sanction for such a lapse is in the range of BGN 1,000-5,000. According to her, fodder with GMO soybeans as those detected by the ecological organisation cannot have a negative impact on the products from animals fed on such fodder. In this case, laying hens were fed on this GMO fodder.
During the same radio broadcast, Iliyan Iliev from For the Earth association explained that only one of the six purchased samples had a label that the product contains GMO soybeans. “The end user in the store where these eggs are sold should know that they are from hens fed with GMO fodder. Control over fodder should be stronger,” stated Iliev.

Fodder with GMO soya substrate is imported from third countries through Romania. A day ago, the Community Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development in Varna warned that GMO fodder is freely sold on the Bulgarian market without special labelling.
