Boyko Borissov: BSP bought the elections in Kyustendil

“The Bulgarian Socialist Party bought the elections in the town of Kyustendil.” said Boyko Borissov, Leader of GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) when answering a question why did his party lose the votes for Municipal Councillors. Borissov advised the journalists to inspect the low number of ballots cast for GERB in the Roma neighborhood in Kyustendil, which showed that the Government had not bought any votes.

After the final counting of the ballots, the Municipal Election Commission reported that the Kyustendil Coalition received most of the mandates in the new Municipal Council - 14. The Bulgarian Socialist Party got 7 mandates, GERB - 4 and the Leader party of Hristo Kovachki - 4. Three places went to the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, 2 for the Agrarian People’s Union. The Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, the Initiative for Kyustendil-Osogovo Coalition, and the independent candidate Kiril Stanchev each received one mandate. The National Union Ataka and the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation will not have representatives in the Municipal Council. The voter turnout was 33.99%.

“The elections in the town of Kyustendil are the most manipulated ones I have ever seen,” said yesterday Deputy Chairman of Ataka Desislav Chukolov. According to him, votes were mainly bought in the Roma neighbourhood and this determined the outcome of the elections. A short video was shown in the Ataka headquarter, displaying a young Roma person, who explains that one vote usually costs BGN 20-30.

According to the MRF Leader Yane Yanev, a very dangerous trend became apparent after these elections. In his words, the Mayor manipulated the elections, forcing all those connected to the Municipality to vote in favour of his political formation.
