Borissov supports a referendum, but only if it is held simultaneously with the elections

“We support a referendum, but it should be held during the elections and should specify the terms under which the Belene NPP can exist,” Bulgarian PM Boyko Borissov said at a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. “The referendum costs about BGN 30-40 mln and I cannot provide this money,” Mr. Borissov argued. It became clear that he supports the idea of conducting the national survey simultaneously with the parliamentary elections, which will be held in the summer of 2013. Thus, the referendum would cost far less, according to Mr. Borissov.

“Our press office will confirm this – we firmly support the idea of simultaneously holding the parliamentary elections and the referendum on the Belene NPP, but if people support the Belene NPP, they should know what will follow, and if they reject the Belene NPP, they should know what will follow as well,” Mr. Borissov said according to the minutes of the meeting.

The Prime Minister explained that if Bulgarians support the nuclear power plant, everyone will have “to pay the equivalent of a Mercedes for the power plant”. Mr. Borissov added that Sergey Stanishev knows this, but he “is being mean” to Bulgarians.

Later on, the PM elaborated on his proposal, adding that the referendum should include an explanation: “it should say: why didn't Stanishev support Belene in 2007 or 2008. People should answer – fear, pressure, terror, a lack of courage to resist, as Nikolay Mladenov put it.
