Hristo Kazandzhiev: We may lose part of our gas transmission network

“The South Stream project and the negotiated lower prices of Gazprom supplies are a small bonus, but the important question is what Bulgaria promised in order to achieve it,” energy expert Hristo Kazandzhiev told Bulgaria On Air on Thursday. According to him, experts fear that, by participating in the South Stream project, Bulgaria will lose part of its gas transmission network.

He said that expectations of finding oil and gas reserves in the Black Sea basin were completely well-grounded. Bulgaria has held great expectations about this basin over the last 20 years, but even if reserves are found there, the results will come much later – the results will be known in 5 years and we could extract natural gas at least 10 years later, according to Mr. Kazandzhiev. The presence of natural gas on Bulgarian territory would be felt by the family budget of Bulgarians, the energy expert added. According to him, the government has not delayed its decision to explore for natural gas now. “If the presence of natural gas is confirmed, Bulgaria will not need to sign a gas supply contract,” Mr. Kazandzhiev explained. However, he said that gas would still be imported but at much lower prices. He said that Bulgaria would benefit from the contract signed with Total E&P Bulgaria on Thursday, while the well-being of Bulgarians would also improve.
