An increasing number of Bulgarians prepare pickles, compotes and other winter supplies

Some 67% of Bulgarian citizens declare that every autumn they prepare some kind of canned food for use during the winter. The data came from a nationally representative survey by BBSS Gallup International, commissioned by Klassa newspaper.

Despite the wide variety of food products on the Bulgarian market even during the winter, the share of Bulgarians who prepare products for the winter is not decreasing. On the contrary, it is increasing - today, 67% of Bulgarian citizens admit that they prepare pickles, compotes, etc. each year, and 8% say they prepare winter supplies from time to time. The total share of homemade winter supplies lovers is by about 5 percentage points higher than the measured in the autumn of 2010.

Although the most common reason why Bulgarians prepare canned foods is to save money, a lot of Bulgarians do it because of the taste of home-made compotes and pickled vegetables. Actually, there is an increase namely in the share of Bulgarians who do not prepare winter supplies in order to save money, but rather to enjoy delicious home-made food - this percentage has increased from 31% in 2010 to 38% this year.

The greatest share of people preparing winter supplies is among those living in villages and small towns - 87% of the inhabitants of villages and 81% of those living in small towns prepare canned food for the winter. Just under 80% of pensioners also prepare jars of food and cans each year.

Although preparing winter supplies is most popular among the elderly and among people outside the big cities, this does not mean that the rest of the population is deprived of home-made products. Up to 55% of young adult Bulgarians (between 18 and 25 years) prepare or at least participate in the preparation of such products.

The fact that 48% of people with a personal monthly income of more than BGN 700 don't miss autumn preparation of pickles, compotes and other winter products either, comes in response to the claim that the preparation of winter supplies is practiced mainly by people without resources and the aim is to save money. Some 50% of these people say that they prepare winter supplies because of the authentic homemade taste which cannot be found in products available on the market. The situation is similar among university graduates - almost half of them prepare jars of food and cans mainly because of the original taste.
