The largest number of Bulgarians abroad work in Spain and Greece

The largest number of Bulgarians abroad live and work in Spain, followed by Greece, the UK, Germany and Cyprus, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy announced exclusively for Klassa.

According to official data of the Address Register, in December 2011, Bulgarian citizens in Spain totaled 171,769. Our compatriots are about 3% of the foreigners in that country.

The number of Bulgarians registered in the social security system at the end of 2011 was about 54,000. About 35,000 Bulgarians in Spain are employed in construction, manufacturing and the hospitality industry. Agricultural workers are about 15,000 and domestic servants - about 4,000.

According to unofficial information (cited by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy), the number of our compatriots in Greece is about 120,000, out of which about 70,000 have settled there permanently. The difference in the data is due to the seasonal workers who are hired in our southern neighbour between April and October.

The largest number of Bulgarians are concentrated in the region of Attica (Athens and Piraeus), followed by the southwestern coast of the Peloponnese, the islands of Crete and Rhodes, and northern Greece. Seasonal workers choose the region of Central Macedonia.

The main branches preferred by our compatriots working in Greece are tourism, construction and agriculture. According to data of the Centre for Labour Force Survey in Greece, about 60% of the Bulgarian citizens in Greece are women and 75% of our compatriots in Greece have secondary education. Most of the women work in the service sector – mainly as domestic servants, in retail trade and the hospitality industry, and men - in construction, tourism and agriculture.
