Djankov: NRA and the Customs Agency overfulfilled the plan for 2012

For 2012, the National Revenue Agency (NRA) collected 101% of the pledged, while the Customs Agency - 103%, Finance Minister Simeon Djankov announced on NTV. "This better performance is due to the fact that December is always quite strong - given the Holidays and the fact that a lot of people shop," explained Djankov. Both institutions overfulfilled their budgets by BGN 200 mln.

This year, incomes in certain sectors are expected to increase. However, it will become clear which these sectors are no earlier than March. The Finance Minister said that the two most important issues for him now are the country's financial health and unemployment. According to him, one way to deal with rising unemployment includes programmes for the long-term unemployed. For several weeks, a special programme has been developed that will create an alternative environment for laid-off workers, the Minister added.

Asked whether police officers' incomes will increase, according to the proposal aimed at the reduction of corruption, Simeon Djankov said that they are "high enough" and, in his opinion, there should be no increase. The Minister made it clear, however, that there would be an increase in the salaries of doctors, in the army and in culture. "By the end of the month, all increases in income should be clear," he said.

The Finance Minister also said that VMZ-Sopot's rescue includes better financial discipline. He pointed out that the lack of such discipline has been the main cause of the serious problems in the factory so far, as well as in other large state-owned enterprises, such as BDZ, for example. According to Djankov, it is inappropriate that the State should have a stake in companies such as VMZ-Sopot, the products of which compete with other private companies in the country, working with far fewer workers and realising higher profits.
