MPs freeze their salaries as of February 1

MPs voted today a decision to freeze their salaries, approved by 96 MPs and opposed by only one MP from Ataka party. The decision will come into force as of February 1 and will be valid until the end of the present National Assembly’s mandate. The draft decision was submitted by Krasimir Velchev, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of GERB.

“The decision is not a new one. Salaries were frozen for the entire mandate of the 41st National Assembly. At the beginning of each year, statistics on the average salary of the administration are released. Data for the most recent quarter is waited for and a decision to freeze the salaries is made,” explained Velchev.

MPs receive a salary equal to three average salaries in the country, calculated on the basis of National Statistical Institute data. MPs also get additional remuneration for participation in parliamentary committees. MPs’ salaries have been frozen since 2009.
