Defence Minister: We will start training the military in resistance to terrorist threats

“We will start training the military officers in resistance and response to terrorist threats.”
This is what Bulgarian Minister of Defence Nikolay Nenchev said speaking with journalists upon leaving the sitting of the Security Council at the Council of Ministers,FOCUS News Agency reporter said.
“There were several accents at the sitting. The new thing is that the armed forces will take part in anti-terrorism operations. If the act is adopted, they will have the right to search people and premises, inspect objects and possessions, make arrests, use arms, which make me think that there is a need to immediately start training the officers because they have not executed such missions and engagements before,” Minister Nenchev commented further.
“I believe I will issue such an order on launching the training programme immediately over the next days,” the minister remarked.
Commenting on the plan to restrict citizens’ rights and freedoms when carrying out anti-terrorism operations, the minister of defence explained that the measures and their scope would depend on the concrete threat.
“We discussed this in detail. The discussion will continue, as well as at the parliament,” Mr Nenchev added.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov summoned the Security Council over the anti-terrorism legislation on Tuesday morning.
The meeting was attended by the minister of interior, minister of defence, minister of foreign affairs, minister of finance, head of eh defence, secretary general of the interior ministry, chairpersons of the State Agency for National Security and the State Intelligence Agency, and other officials.
