Prosecutor’s Office: defendants in Belene NPP deal case stopped from trips abroad

 The Prosecutor General has issued a decree under which the two defendants for the Belene N-plant deal, the former executive directors of the National Electric Company Lyubomir Velkov and Mardik Papazyan, cannot leave the country without his explicit permission. BGNES reports that the news has come at a briefing given at the Central Courthouse by the Spokesperson of the Prosecutor General Rumyana Arnaoudova. Arnaoudova has said that in setting the measure the prosecutors have not taken into account the size of the damage. The two defendants have said they do not understand the charges brought against them. They have been charged in connection with a contract for equipment of the Belene N-plant signed with the Russian company Atomstroyexport in November 2007. According to the prosecution the contract has entailed losses exceeding 77 million euro.
