Bulgaria Firm in Support of UN Resolution 1973

"Bulgaria's position in support of UN Security Council Resolution 1973 has not changed since it was adopted," Bulgarian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Vessela Cherneva said on Tuesday, reacting to media reports about the country's stance on the situation in Libya.

"It is impossible for Bulgaria to take part in a military operation, but the country is ready to contribute to a number of other aspects of this operation. We consider this operation legitimate, because it rests on an international legal basis; necessary, because the actions of the Gaddafi regime towards itsown citizens are absolutely unacceptable; and correct, because this is the way for the international community to exert influence, because otherwise this very international community,
of which we are a member, would lose its legitimacy," Cherneva said.

Bulgaria's actions depend entirely on NATO's future decision, which will hopefully come quickly, she said. In the context of the EU, the country will act in a coordinated manner, mostly for humanitarian missions. "Bulgaria is ready to help enforce the arms embargo by committing a naval frigate, and to share in humanitarian missions," she said.

"We insist that NATO should assume command of this operation as well, because we believe that this is the best way to combine military planning with the political will for action," the Spokesperson said.
