GERB remains the leading political force in the country

GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) was the leading party in May, according to a nationally representative survey of the National Centre for Public Opinion Studies (NCPOS). When answering the question: “Which of the following political parties do you most sympathise with?", some 30% of the respondents said GERB. The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) ranks second with 16% of approval, followed by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) with 7.6%, the Ataka party with 4% and the Blue Coalition with 3.2%.

“Two years after the elections, GERB has kept two-thirds of its electorate, as well as the socio-demographic profile of its supporters,” said Lydia Yordanova, Director of NCPOS. According to her, GERB has maintained a higher than average support among young people of up to 30 years of age, among the residents of regional cities and wealthy citizens.

BSP can count on the votes of nearly 80% of the electorate which supported the party in 2009.

It is important to mention that 35% of Bulgarians declared that they felt disappointed with the political party they sympathise with. This share is lower (about 25%) with respect to the supporters of GERB and BSP. Now, a successful launch of a new party, other than the existing ones, is not likely to take place - some 65% of respondents said that they would not vote for such a formation.

A total of 69% of the respondents consider Kristalina Georgieva as the most successful public official abroad.

Rosen Plevneliev, Minister of Construction and Public Works, definitely heads the ranking of the most highly approved of Bulgarian politicians in May with 60% of the votes. Sofia Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, ranks second with 53%, while PM Boyko Borissov is third with 51% , followed by President Georgi Parvanov with 47% , and Tsvetan Tsvetanov with 44%. The Ministers Naydenov, Mladenov, Rashidov, Traikov and Neykov rank next and the Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Tsetska Tsacheva, occupies the 10th position.
