The Soviet Army Monument has been cleaned

The Soviet Army Monument, which was painted by an unknown street artist to represent a set of US pop culture characters, was washed clean on Monday night. The initiative, however, was not taken by the Sofia Municipality but by the Bulgaria – Russia forum and other NGOs. A few days ago, the bronze figures of the Soviet soldiers were painted and turned into various US superhero and other pop culture characters, including Santa Claus, Superman and Captain America, among others.

Svetlana Sharenkova, Chairwoman of the Bulgaria – Russia forum, explained that the cleaning cost about BGN 1,000 and the money had been collected by the organisation. “We saw on Facebook that some organisations began to invite people at the site of the monument in the morning in order to prevent the cleaning and clashes were the last thing we sought. That is why we started the cleaning so early,” she specified. Later on, Sofia Municipality explained that it had not given its permission for the cleaning.

“The monument is a State property. A coordination letter for its cleaning was issued by the Sofia Governor of Sofia,” read an announcement of the Municipality. “I do not approve of any action at night, no matter for what reason,” commented Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and added she had nothing to do with this.

The Mayor explained that the procedure for designing and installing a video monitoring system in eight parks and six subways was in its final stage. Video monitoring will be conducted in the area around the Soviet Army Monument and in the entire Knyaz Boris’ Garden. The contract is worth more than BGN 300,000.
