Bulgarian universities outside the EU's Top 100 in terms of student exchange

Unfortunately, no Bulgarian University was ranked among the EU's Top 100 in terms of the number of students participating in the ERASMUS Exchange Programme (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) of the European Union, became clear from the statistics of the European Commission announced yesterday. It represents the most prestigious universities for the 2009/2010 academic year. The ERASMUS programme grants scholarships to over 200,000 students from 32 countries annually.

The Top 100 of higher educational establishments, which sent and admitted students to courses and internship programmes, is topped by Spanish colleges.

Seven Spanish and three Italian higher education institutions are ranked among the ten most popular foreign EU universities. The universities of Granada and Valencia are the most preferred by EU's young people involved in the ERASMUS Programme. Each of the educational institutions managed to attract 1,600 -1,900 foreign students in the last academic year. The most prestigious university in Eastern Europe is Charles University in Prague, ranked 13th with a total of 997 students exchanged under the ERASMUS Programme.

The University of Granada sent the highest number of students abroad (1,851). It is followed by the Complutense University of Madrid and the Bologna University in Italy.

"It is very unfortunate that Bulgarian universities are absent from the Top 100. This is the assessment of the competitiveness and quality of Bulgarian higher education. Our universities are not cooperating sufficiently with the EU in terms of educational programmes," commented the left-wing MEP, Ivaylo Kalfin.
