CPC: Prices of rooms in tourism are very dynamic

There is a strong elasticity of the hotel product or a dynamic variance in the accommodation prices, shows analysis of the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) on the tourism sector. At the same time, the CPC recognises the importance of tour–operators especially in some types of tourism. According to analysts, the price dynamics is due to the severe economic situation and to the oversupply in the sector.

The anti-trust commission warns tourism branch organisations at national and regional level not to interfere too much in the price policy in the sector. The CPC officials consider that some practices implemented by the professional organisations could exceed the standards of acceptable and beneficial cooperation with tour operators.

The sector analysis of CPC examined the market of services provided by various categories of hotels for the period 2006-2010, determined by the type of tourism - sea, spa, mountain, ski, business, cultural-historical and ethnographic tourism. The analysis covers issues such as: supply and demand for hotel services, price dynamics and market shares of hotels in the respective municipalities, contractual relationship between hoteliers and tour operators, the role of the professional organizations in the sector and others. CPC examined some contractual clauses between tour operators and hoteliers, which can distort the free and fair competition.

In general, however, currently, there are no preconditions for anticompetitive behaviour in the sector, conclude CPC officials.
