Rosen Plevneliev denies that he has been involved in a bribery scheme

I have not held any meetings with any brokers. Personally, I was not asked to give a bribe. You know yourself that bribes are not demanded directly but are merely hinted at. I have never paid a bribe to anyone. This is what Rosen Plevenliev, who is the GERB candidate for President, said yesterday at a press conference convened by him at the GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) Headquarters. The occasion was set by the fact that, on September 4, the Chairman of the GERB Pre-election Headquarters, Tsvetan Tsvetanov stated at the presentation of the nominated presidential couple Plevneliev-Popova that, in 2007, three municipal councillors from the former Sofia Municipal Council demanded a bribe of €500,000 from Rosen Plevneliev relating to the deal on the Business Park Sofia. According to Tsvetanov, Plevneliev refused to enter into corrupt schemes but he failed to refer the case to the Prosecutor's Office. Hours before Plevneliev's statement, the left-wing candidate for Sofia mayor, Georgi Kadiev, as well as the MPs from the Coalition for Bulgaria, Petar Kouroumbashev and Zhelyo Boychev organised a briefing where they accused Plevneliev of concealing the names of the three municipal councillors who had demanded a bribe.

Georgi Kadiev appealed to Rosen Plevenliev, Yordanka Fandakova, Boyko Borissov and Tsvetan Tsvetanov to admit that they have known about this bribery scheme since 2007. According to him, the names of municipal councillors who had blackmailed Plevneliev are already known because the GERB presidential candidate had disclosed these to BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party), to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, as well as to the Interior Minister Tsvetanov.

Peter Kouroumbashev himself explained how Rosen Plevneliev had complained to him that pressure was being exerted on him by the councillors of the parliamentary majority. ''Then, I informed the Chairman of the Municipal Council, Andrey Ivanov. Afterwards, I organised a meeting between Mr. Plevneliev and Mr. Andrey Ivanov, " explained Kouroumbashev. Kadiev added that two of the participants in the bribery scheme were current GERB municipal councillors and one of them was even suggested to Rosen Plevneliev for the position of deputy minister.
