GERB with a chance to win the vote in 15 regional centres out of 28

In an extremely competitive battle, the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party won the elections in 11 regional centres and gave ground in seven others in the second round of the local elections yesterday. GERB has mayors in a total of 15 out of 28 regional centres, after the first and second rounds of the local elections.

Yesterday, mayors were elected in runoffs in 18 regional towns. The results in the remaining 9 centres were determined in the first round of the elections last Sunday. In the first round, held on October 23, GERB won in the capital Sofia, and in the towns of Burgas, Dobrich and Gabrovo.

After the second vote, the ruling party won definitively in the towns of Varna, Blagoevgrad, Veliko Tarnovo, Vratsa, Pernik, Pleven, Russe, Silistra, Smolyan, Stara Zagora and Yambol, but it lost the vote in the towns of Sliven, Haskovo and Lovech.

According to sociologists, "the blue fortress" Pleven fell and the GERB mayoral candidate Dimitar Stoykov won the race against Nayden Zelenogorski.

The candidates of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) won the vote in the towns of Lovech, Sliven and Targovishte. In Vidin, the competition between the nominees of GERB and BSP was on until the last minute of the election day. The result there was almost equal - 50%/50%.

The election results in the towns of Vidin, Vratsa, Lovech, Pernik, Plovdiv and Smolyan were close as well - yesterday, the gap in support between the two candidates was in the range of about 2-3%.

The ruling party won a landslide victory in the town of Stara Zagora where the former mayor Zhivko Todorov won 73%.
The GERB party won a total victory in the town of Blagoevgrad as well. The candidate of GERB, Atanas Kambitov, received 64% of the votes there.

The former Mayor of Varna, Kiril Yordanov won a landslide victory in the city of Varna. He was also nominated by the ruling party. This will be his fourth term in office as mayor of Varna. He received some 59% of the votes, while his opponent - the independent candidate Veselin Mareshki - a mere 41%.

The GERB party won a definitive victory in the town of Russe as well. Plamen Stoilov - nominated by the ruling party - won some 62%.

The former Mayor of Sliven, Yordan Lechkov, nominated by GERB, however, lost the race against his competitor from BSP Nikola Milev, according to preliminary estimates.

The GERB party won the mayoral race in the town of Vratsa. Petya Avramova won 52.5% of the votes and the independent candidate Nikolai Ivanov – 47.50%.
