UDF grants a vote of confidence to Martin Dimitrov

Yesterday, the National Council of the UDF (Union of Democratic Forces) granted a vote of confidence to the party Chairman, Martin Dimitrov. As a result, he will keep his leadership position. 45 people supported Dimitrov, while nine UDF members were against, three abstained and more than 20 party members did not participate in the vote. They explained their decision on the grounds that such a procedure is not stipulated in UDF's statutes. A total of 82 delegates attended the meeting.

The confidence motion was requested by Martin Dimitrov himself. He motivated his request with the poor performance of the Blue party in the recent presidential elections. It was the election results which prompted the Sofia City UDF branch to demand the resignation of Martin Dimitrov. The same request was lodged by the MEP from the UDF Nadezhda Neynsky.

"The demanded vote of confidence complies with the EU standard for seeking support from the party. The better option is to continue our collaboration on strengthening the party. This leadership has further political potential. UDF will be the intelligent opposition to GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) but, at the same time, it will distance itself from BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party)," commented Martin Dimitrov after the vote.

"We need to appoint an official leadership which must schedule a conference," stated Nadezhda Neynsky. She described the vote of confidence as a walkover victory.
Nayden Zelenogorski commented, in turn, that the future of the right wing in Bulgaria belongs to the Blue Coalition plus, whose membership must increase.

Despite the convincing result in favour of Martin Dimitrov after the inside-party vote, the members of the UDF National Council commented backstage that the vote was "a circus and a parody." Blue Party activists protested that Dimitrov has not been elected by the National Executive Council but still demanded a vote of confidence from it.
