Head of Sheinovo Hospital resigns

Dr. Ivan Kostov, Executive Director the Second Municipal Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynaecology Sheinovo in Sofia, has handed his resignation to the Council of the medical establishment, said today the Government’s press office. The decision was made upon the insistence of PM Boyko Borissov in order to preserve the image of the maternity ward hospital and continue the investigation into the death of a woman in childbirth, 35-year-old Nadezhda Uzunova. The Prosecution, the Interior Ministry, the Medical Audit Agency and the Sofia Municipality are investigating the tragic accident. “I handed in my resignation as Executive Officer in order to defend the prestige of the hospital where I have worked and the people with whom I have worked all the time,” said Dr. Kostov. Dr. Tanya Andreeva, BoD Chair of Sheinovo, will assume his duties until a competition for the vacant position is held.

Dr. Ivan Kostov’s resignation comes after the death of Nadezhda Uzunova and her newborn daughter in the Sheinovo maternity ward hospital. The young woman died on Monday night - she was sent away from Sheinovo several times instead of being accepted for delivery and her baby died the day before yesterday in the Pediatric Clinic. Because of this medical negligence, Health Minister Dr. Stefan Konstantinov suggested a ten-fold increase of the sanctions for hospitals. Not long ago, the Medical Audit Agency recommended a sanction for Sheinovo after yet another case of a deceased woman in labour. MPs of the parliamentary Health Committee will discuss the possibility of increasing the period in which doctors who have made mistakes will be deprived of their right to practice. The initiative was announced by the committee’s Chair Desislava Atanasova. “Medics may be deprived of their right to practice for a period of three months to two years,” she specified.
