PM Borissov retains confidence, GERB loses 2%

PM Boyko Borissov retains his confidence level at 38%, but GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) lost 2% of its supporters, compared to December 2011, showed a survey conducted at the end of February by sociological agency Alpha Research among 1,015 people.

Some 23.9% are now inclined to vote for GERB. The biggest opposition party - the Bulgarian Socialist Party registered a slight increase in confidence - from 16% to 17%. Sociologists predict eventual stronger dynamics in the rating of Socialists if they replace their leader. This is due to the fact that former Bulgarian president and contender for BSP leader, Georgi Parvanov, has a much better image than the incumbent party Chairman, Sergey Stanishev. Parvanov is supported by 33% of the polled Bulgarians, and Stanishev – by 20%.

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms and its leader Ahmed Dogan attract the traditional 5% support, while the confidence in the Blue Coalition and in Ataka party is 2.9% 1.9%, respectively.

New political organisations are not perceived as a viable alternative yet, according to Alpha Research. Although Meglena Kuneva, Chairperson of the Bulgaria for Citizens movement, is among the most approved politicians in the country enjoying a 26% confidence, only 10% of the respondents are interest in this movement, and merely 2% are firm that they will vote for her.

The trust in the Government, the Prime Minister and the President - all appointed by GERB - remains more or less unchanged from December 2011. The Government is approved by 22% of the polled Bulgarians and disapproved by 36%. PM Borissov enjoys a 38% support and the disapproval for him is 33%. President Rosen Plevneliev enjoys the confidence of 43% of the respondents and a 16% negative assessment.

According to the Alpha Research, the National Assembly still suffers a deficit of public trust. Although confidence in Parliament has remained unchanged at 11%, and that in its Chairperson Tsetska Tsacheva – at 15%, the level of public approval for the institution remains low.
