President Parvanov and PM Borissov enjoy equal ratings

President Georgi Parvanov and PM Boyko Borissov enjoy equal ratings with respect to public confidence, showed data from the traditional political and economic index of polling agency Gallup International, presented yesterday. The survey was conducted from March 31 to April 7. According to the results, confidence in Boyko Borissov and Georgi Parvanov remained at 39% in March and April. Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Rosen Plevneliev had the same level of approval. Bulgaria’s EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva retained her top position in the ranking with 62% of confidence. Among the most approved politicians were also Meglena Kuneva, Yordanka Fandakova, Miroslav Naydenov and Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

According to sociologist Andrey Raychev, there are two possible options for BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party) to participate in the elections. According to him, whoever is the left-wing party’s presidential nominee, he or she would get to the run-off, but will not collect the necessary votes because all will unite against this candidacy. Thus, “the silver medal” will remain for BSP. The other option for BSP is to rely on a centrist rather than a party candidacy and get the support of centrist parties, but BSP will only have a supporting role in that case.

The answers to the question “Which party/coalition would you vote for if the elections were held today?” showed almost 25% of votes for GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), the level remaining unchanged in March and April, and some 3% increase in the votes for BSP to a little over 20%. “The increase in the support for BSP is not at the expense of GERB, which can be interpreted as a positive development for the left-wing party six months before the elections,” sociologists say. About 6.2% of the polled will support MRF (Movement for Rights and Freedoms), some 4.3% will vote for the Blue Coalition, about 3% - for Ataka party, around 1% for OLJ (Order, Law and Justice) and 38% said they will not cast their ballots.

With regard to the economic crisis, the survey reported that the peak of economic anxiety among Bulgarians had passed but, nevertheless, negative evaluations and pessimism remain high. “Having registered a significant increase in the negative assessments of our individual economic situation and that of the country, April brought some relief,” explained Parvan Simeonov from Gallup. He said 81% of the polled predicted price hikes over the next two to three months but in March they were 86%. Some 45% of Bulgarians said in April they expected unemployment to increase, down from 52% in March.

The question about the support for continuing the construction of the Belene NPP was answered positively by nearly 50% of the people surveyed, 15% wanted the project to be frozen and 37% could not take a firm stand on the issue.
