The MI counts some 299 leaders of criminal groups in Bulgaria

“The leaders of organised criminal groups registered in the country last year were 299,” announced Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov during the National Meeting of the Ministry of Interior (MI) in Veliko Tarnovo yesterday. The performance of the department in 2011 and the priority tasks for 2012 were debated at the meeting.

“Pre-trial proceedings were initiated against 238 of the criminal bosses,” Tsvetanov said. Security measures were imposed on 119 of them, while 20 criminals were convicted.

In November 2010, the MI counted 223 leaders of organised criminal groups. In June 2011, Tsvetanov announced that there were 250 criminal bosses.

At the National Meeting, the Minister presented the statistics that, last year, 126,108 crimes against persons and property, including economic crimes, were registered. Out of these, some 89% were against persons and property. “This sector reported a 14% reduction in criminal acts, compared to 2010," said the Interior Minister.

In 2011, 121 murders were registered, 90% of these of domestic character. The Minister pointed out the year 2008 as a comparison when the registered murders were 172 and in 1998 - 381.

Armed robberies on highways decreased by 71%. Tsvetanov reported a decrease in robberies in general. Last year, some 375 robberies were registered, while in 2010 these were 3,737.

Collecting more information on organised criminal groups at the local level will be among the main focuses of the MI during the summer. The MI reported an increase in the conventional crime rate because of the economic crisis.
