Borissov dismisses the outrageous Spokeswoman of MIA-Varna

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has sanctioned the dismissal of Kalinka Pencheva, Spokeswoman for the district office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Varna, the Government Press Office announced on Thursday. “Pencheva has made unacceptable, for an MIA officer, remarks about a Bulgarian citizen, damaging the department’s image in the process,” Borissov pointed out explaining the grounds for terminating Pencheva’s employment.

MIA-Varna’s Spokeswoman called a Varna resident, Boyan Maksimov, a “countryside fool“ after he took a photo of three police officers sleeping in their patrol car while on duty in July this year. BTV aired the material containing the outrageous remark on October 23. Maksimov complained that after he posted the photo of the sleeping officers on the Internet, the local police began harassing him, bringing him down to the station to take statements and giving him tickets for driving violations. Asked by a BTV reporter to comment on the case, MIA-Varna’s Spokeswoman Kalinka Pencheva said: “This individual, Maksimov, does not merit our attention. What can I say, he is a fool. A countryside fool, who has nothing better to do with his time.” Pencheva’s behaviour triggered a wave of public outcry in social media and Internet forums. Maksimov himself threatened to sue Pencheva.

As a Spokeswoman for MIA-Varna, Pencheva is an MIA employee, which puts her dismissal within the competence of the Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov. Supposedly, the Prime Minister took matters in his own hands, after it was revealed that he is the godfather of Pencheva’s son.
