Desislava Atanasova: Public hospitals pay their liabilities strictly

By October 31, 2012, state and municipal hospitals' liabilities amounted to BGN 283 mln. Of these, arrears amount to BGN 50 mln, Health Minister Desislava Atanasova said for BNR. Almost all government hospitals have repayment plans, they implement them strictly and are paying their obligations, Atanasova assured. Regarding the case of Varna's doctor who performed his duties in an intoxicated state, the Health Minister said that, currently, disciplinary proceedings are being carried out at the Emergency Service of Varna, and, at the beginning of the coming week, the medical audit will give its assessment, as well. The doctor will be discharged and his medical rights will be revoked.

In this connection, Minister Atanasova said that she expects the Bulgarian Medical Association to refer itself. This is the third consecutive case of improper and unacceptable behaviour of doctors in the past few weeks, Minister Atanasova commented.

Some BGN 148 mln from the European Regional Development Fund will be allocated for combating cancer in the country. A total of 13 projects have been approved. Minister Atanasova added that, thanks to the savings on contracts worth BGN 27 mln, such projects will be implemented in hospitals in Stara Zagora, Gabrovo, Silistra, and Targovishte.
