Passengers will be able to choose the scanners at airports

“Passengers can refuse to be checked with the new body scanners which will be introduced at European Community airports. Pregnant women, children or ill people should have a choice whether to pass through these scanners or through the standard ones,” said for the “Evropa Sega” (Europe Now) broadcast MEP from the EPP Group Maria Nedelcheva. Her proposals for amendments to the document, drafted by the Civil Liberties and Transport Committees in the EP, were backed during the discussions.

The ban on the carrying of liquids in hand baggage on board will continue until 2013 when the new scanner devices will be introduced. According to Nedelcheva, these should not be mandatory at EU airports but each member-state, should implement these, in accordance to its capabilities and financial resources. The new generation of scanners will scan the upper body of passengers.
